First public meeting held to discuss potential new boating rules at Indian Lake

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — A meeting was held Wednesday night about the possibility of making some significant changes to boating rules at Indian Lake.
Some of the proposed rule changes include restricting water sports, implementing new boat length requirements and no joy riding on any watercraft before 10 a.m.
Another change could be water sport time restrictions on weekends and holidays.
One resident voiced his opinion at the meeting about the possible rule change.
"I think these proposed time restrictions are totally absurd. I can't see any property owner supporting having a time restriction on their recreation at a lake."
Officials with Indian Lake say this is just one of many public hearings on the matter.
Statement from Indian Lake Borough Council President Scott Hollern:
Indian Lake Borough Council, the Mayor, and the Boating Committee are considering revisions to the current Boating Ordinance (#191) to address growing concerns from boaters and lakefront property owners. New types of watersports and watercraft and increased lake activity, combined with the small size and narrow shape of our lake, make it necessary to consider additional options to maintain the safety and long-term useability of the lake. Related discussions have been ongoing since 2019 due to increasing growth. We currently have nearly 1,000 registered powered boats on a relatively narrow 750-acre lake. Some options under consideration are improving the education of all boat operators, an Indian Lake specific operator license, limiting some activity in specific areas of the lake, additional limitations on the size and type of watercraft using the lake, and additional ways to reduce reckless operation of watercraft. Our police department prioritizes water patrol during boating season and works closely with the PA Fish and Boat Commission for increased safety patrol and enforcement of local and state boating regulations. We want Indian Lake to remain one of the safest and most enjoyable lakes in Pennsylvania for all water sports and activities.
Indian Lake Borough is a leader in transparency. All meetings are open to the public and accessible virtually for out-of-town homeowners. All legislative changes go through a process established by the PA Borough Code with ample opportunity for public comment. We also provide multiple options for homeowners to receive information and to voice opinions and offer suggestions.
The current discussion leading into the 2023 boating season is one of many and will not be the last. Indian Lake continues to experience significant growth and investment that brings increased demand for a limited resource. Our goal is to maintain our lake resource in the best condition possible for a wide variety of users.
