PA Game Commission to conduct additional public survey on reintroducing American Marten
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — State wildlife officials are continuing their efforts to reintroduce the American Marten in Pennsylvania.
During a meeting earlier this week, the Pennsylvania Game Commission decided to temporarily halt its plan while it awaits the results of an additional public survey on the matter.
Wildlife officials say the survey will be conducted to "gauge residents' opinions" on the state's reintroduction plan.
“Given that the survey is not yet completed, I believe it is appropriate that we table this issue at this time to allow for that survey to be completed and the results to be made available to the board and to the public,” Board of Commissioners President Kristen Schnepp-Giger said.
The American Marten vanished from Pennsylvania forests more than 100 years ago.
“It’s a native species that should of been out there that doesn’t pose a huge threat to other species. It can integrate well with all other species, and it would help encourage biodiversity.”
Authorities say preliminary reports indicate that it is favorable to reintroduce the animal back into the Pennsylvania habitat.
